Northland Astronomical Society

We hold regular public viewing nights, usually around the first quarter of the moon, and welcome young and old to come and enjoy the night sky through our state of the art Celestron CGE-14" telescope and other club telescopes. We also hold monthly society members’ evenings, which usually start with a BBQ dinner followed by a quiz and the latest news on the night sky.

Whangarei Native Bird Recovery Centre

Our centre is run by part time staff and volunteers. There are two main aspects of the work we do, the first being care for and rehabilitate injured native birds for release back into the wild. The second aspect of our work is birdlife education, working with the kiwi recovery program and fostering environmental consciousness. Many of the birds we see are brought in by members of the public and we often get unusual birds to care for after storms, such as the albatross. With the help from the community we release them out at sea by the Poor Knights Islands.
