Northland Astronomical SocietyWe hold regular public viewing nights, usually around the first quarter of the moon, and welcome young and old to come and enjoy the night sky through our state of the art Celestron CGE-14" telescope and other club telescopes. Our club owns several vintage vehicles which we display on Wednesdays and special open daysContact Rob Hughes on Phone 09 433-5672 a/hrs Northland Vintage Farm Machinery ClubThere are 34 fully restored farm tractors, bulldozers and other miscellaneous machinery on display in two sheds. From a 1923 Fordson F to a 1950 International Farmall, or a 1930 Cat 10 to a 1950's David Brown T50 Crawler. Most of the machinery has been donated to our club and painstakingly restored. Viewing can be made by appointment, every Tuesday or visit us on special open days.Contact Athol Christensen on Phone 09 433 9799 Whangarei Amateur Radio ClubWe are home to a selection of ex military communication equipment, including the Army, Navy and Airforce. Also on display are early models of homebuilt amateur radio equipment. We have regular evenings at our club station where we communicate with other amateur enthusiasts from around the world, and sometimes in space!Contact Charlie Moates on Phone 09 434-7292 Whangarei Model Engineering ClubWe are a group of model engineers who happen to specialize in trains, although we encourage our members in any other model engineering project they are working on. The third Sunday of each month is a public running day when families can come along and ride the trains for a small fee. We also run on special open days at the Museum.Contact Dave Evans on Phone 09 437-7250 Whangarei Native Bird and Forest Protection SocietyOver the years our club has supported the Whangarei Kiwi House, both financially and with volunteer labour. We meet every two months, on the second Tuesday of the month and all are welcome.Contact Mick Collier on Phone 09 438-6400 Whangarei Native Bird Recovery CentreOur centre is run by part time staff and volunteers. There are two main aspects of the work we do, the first being care for and rehabilitate injured native birds for release back into the wild. The second aspect of our work is birdlife education, working with the kiwi recovery program and fostering environmental consciousness. Many of the birds we see are brought in by members of the public and we often get unusual birds to care for after storms, such as the albatross. With the help from the community we release them out at sea by the Poor Knights Islands. Contact Robert Webb on phone 09 438-1457Visit website Whangarei Rock and Gemstone ClubThe Whangarei Rock & Gem Club meet monthly in the education centre at the Museum while we fundraise to build our own club rooms on the property. We are keen collectors of everything terra firma and show the public the process of polishing rocks and identifying types of rock on special open days at the Museum.Contact Rob Carver on Phone 09 435 7373 Whangarei Stationary Engineering ClubOur club is a group of enthusiastic people dedicated to collecting and restoring stationary engines. These special engines were used before electricity became mainstream. Farmers relied on stationary engines for milking, shearing, driving generators. We have two 10 tonne, almost 100hp, stationary engines working and on display every Wednesday, on special open days and by appointment. In total there are 240 restored engines on display.Contact Roy Goodall on Phone 09 435-6708 Whangarei Steam and Model Railway ClubThe pride of our club is Seymour, the Peckett steam locomotive gifted to us by Wilsons (NZ) Portland Cement works in 1977. This steam loco has recently undergone full restoration works.
