Event Guide

An Eye on the Universe

The exhibition features 30 stunning astronomical photographs of the earth, solar system, Milky Way and beyond – taken by astrophotographers from around New Zealand. We are especially pleased to showcase further images taken by local astrophotography Tony Kwak as well as display a telescope handmade by a local amateur astronomer Jim Hancock in the 1960s.

You will be amazed at the diversity of the images and the beauty that the natural phenomenon produced in the skies above us. Photographing the Universe was once the domain of professionals using large, expensive telescopes but now it is also within reach of amateur astronomers throughout the world. Medium size, professional quality telescopes are now affordable by dedicated enthusiasts, as are the accessories such as the CCD or DSLR cameras. This exhibition is a sample of what is being achieved.

The exhibition is on tour from Southland Museum under the auspices of the Royal Astronomical Society of New Zealand to celebrate The Year of Astronomy 2009.
